Baby Carrot - Play Every Day - Some Guy Down the Street
Review by: Jennifer Perkins
A band coming out of the crevices of obscurity from San Francisco with an intriguing mix of lo-fi Indie rock and high voltage power chords. Sometimes reminding me of Superchunk as the press kit suggested and other times like Beekeeper.
The first two songs on Baby Carrot's debut CD are the best in my opinion. "Chinese Food & Donut" the first song fluctuates between two mediums and can't make up it's mind if it is a slow subtle song or a fast driving one. The confusion and diversity is what makes it stand out. The second song "Bet a Nickel" is much the same way weaving back and forth getting me excited for the rest of the disc.
The CD never quiet reaches the point the first two songs imply that the disc might. You expect it to climax, but unfortunately after the first two songs I started to lose interest. Later in the CD "Cardboard Suit" caught my attention, but the rest just start to either be rock songs or Indie songs, no combination of the two which is what gave Baby Carrot a leg to stand on in the first place.
Baby Carrot can still do a nice Indie song and a nice rock song, their combination of the two are just their strong point. There is even a folky number with "Deciding Time". Songs like "Forgot to Read" are straight forward rock songs. The vocal delivery in "Glasses" is a little jokey for my taste.
Baby Carrot gets bonus points for originality in song structure. It was nice to hear something that was not influenced by The Promise Ring. If they would stick with the songs that seems to have a dichotomy of sounds to them they would be better for it.
