Dryspell - Kitty Porn - Ill Leagal Records
Review by: Jennifer Perkins
I am sad to report that I am not a huge Dryspell fan. They far from suck or anything, they are just not my cup of tea. The guys voice sounds like the dude from The Offspring for one. All the songs are really poppy, but it a "God I hope this is radio friendly" kind of way. They seem like nice jokey guys, they even have a song about I Love Lucy. All the things that make masses of people love you, I just never fit very well into the masses.
Dryspell kind of make me think of what Weezer would sound like if they had had a steadier diet of metal as children. The first track "Tangled" has all the right elements for radio appeal. I can envision the video for "Girlfriends House" in my head. I have to admit, although a little on the cheesy side for my taste, I like this one. The chorus is accented nicely with some claps. Not to mention if track number 4 "Rikk James' Kitty Porn' came on the radio I probably would not change it.
As of late I have become very sensitive to how a record sounds, and I have to say the recording on this thing is really crisp and bright. Which I like. The thing that makes Dryspell stand out is that these guys are all obviously talented musicians. Even though these are basic pop songs, each one still has a little something in them that reminds you that these guys have been playing for a while. They are so tight it makes me think they have been playing for awhile together.
Dryspell are no fools when it comes to writing a catchy hook line and a power chord. These guys are a well-polished pop hit machine, cranking one out right after the other. Put Kitty Porn on random and any song could easily fit right in on the radio and the kids would bop right along. It would not surprise me at all if sometime soon I flip on MTV or the local radio station and hear Dryspell singing a pop ditty to me.
