| Jessica Hopper once mainly known for her work in the zine world, writing her own Hit It or Quit It and working for others like Punk Planet, has branched out into the world of public relations. Her firm Hyper has already landed a few decent bands to promote like the Promise Ring and Pedro the Lion. | ![]() |

Per week how many bands solicit your services? How many bands are you currently working with, and who are some of them? How do you pick and choose the bands on your roster? I couldn't tell you per week. Maybe 2-4 a month. We normally have between 16-22 bands/projects on our roster, about 10-12 are active.
Do you do radio promotion at all? If a band or label only had enough money to hire someone to do either radio or print promotion, which one is a wiser investment? No. It really depends on the project, the band, how much money they have, what thier priorities are.
How many zines/magazines do you mail out to or work with? Are the bulk of them in the US? Is over seas promotion worth the effort? It depends on the band, label, budget, tour etc. bulk is US, unless it's a European tour. Over seas, we send to between 10-20 people and it is always worth it.
In your opinion do you think it is better for a band or label to hire a publicist rather than to try and promote a release on their own? Depends entirely on the band, size of the band, sound etc. and what publicisty companies are interested in representing them.
If you had to pick any one magazine that really seems to have a direct correlation between publishing a positive review of a band and the sells for that band increasing, which magazine would it be? I have ZERO IDEA. There are no hard fast rules. We don't track sales and go 'well spin ran last week and we sold 40 more records in NY'.
Are you a bigger believer in print or online media? Print.
Are there any magazines online or print that you think are a real must for a band or label to advertise in? No. As I said, it depends on the band or a budget or what their sound is, what they are going for, if they are touring.
Do you think there is a secret to the marketability of a band, besides just sounding good? Like good looks, lot's of touring, heavy advertising, positive reviews? Touring will get yr name out like nothing else. Touring is key.
As a publicist how do you feel about this quote by circus man P.T. Barnum "It doesnít matter what they say about you, as long as they spell your name right". In other words, is any press good press? No. But press is press. You don't read yr press kit, you weigh it.
If there was one piece of free advice you could give to a struggling band trying to get their name out what would it be? Money changes everything. Watch out. |
