Taxi
Cab Tipping...
|
|
| Well the other weekend I went out for a night of good old fashioned binge drinking with my girlfriends. Being the responsible young adult I am I took a cab. Austin is not New York, cabs are not very common or at least not in my world. I wondered how you decided how much to tip them? | This is what I came up with… 15% is completely adequate for a taxi driver. Of course less if they suck and more if they blow your dress up, but 15% is average. Just be sure to give them something. I myself am a firm believer in the power of positive reinforcement. |

Where
should the spoon be laid after dessert? If served on plate with low rim,
spoon is to be left inside it. If in cup or bowl, spoon should be placed
on saucer.
|

Beverages
should be served to the right of guest and handled by the base, never
close to rim.

Replenishing
or removing plates from table should always be done to the left side of
guest.

When
should water be served? Before seating guests. It is handy to place a
pitcher on serving table in case anyone cares for more
|

Change
of courses should take place only when all guests have finished eating.
(Rule also applies when serving dessert, coffee or liqueurs).

One
should keep in mind that an overly crowded table is unattractive. A space
of approximately 12 in. should be left between individual place settings
for the guests' comfort as well as to make serving easier.

This is your average red wine glass, that really in a pinch could be used for any kind of wine. The bowl should be big enought that you only fill it half full so you can swirl the wine to act all sophisticated and smell it and admire it's color. | |||

The
bowl of a white wine glass is smaller than that
of a red wine glass, because you don't need to pay attention to the smell,
excuse me, bouquet.

PLACING USED SILVER: I am always wondering at fancier dinners (like I attend them often or something) BUT, when I do....I am always unsure of where to place my used silverware. I don't know weather to sit it on my plate, or on the table cloth, it could make a stain. I referenced Ms. Manners. Sounds pretty complicated. If you are just taking a break from eating you are to criss cross your knife and fork across the plate. If you asking for second helpings, the knife and fork should be at a right angle from the table edge to the right hand side of the plate. If you are done eating place the knife and fork from 11 to 5 on your plate with the fork prongs down and the blade of the knife pointing towards you. Jesus, I'd almost rather stain the table!
NAPKIN ETIQUETTE: We learned above that in a formal place setting the napkin is the outer most item on the left side of your plate. How do you use your napkin? Well you don't tuck it into your shirt like my father, God bless him. A large dinner napkin should be put on the lap folded in half. If it is a smaller sized luncheon napkin you can open it all the way. I like to do the dramatic shake out the fold thing to give the impression I really know what's up. If you leave the table during the meal (or when your done), don't put your napkin in your chair. Always put it loosely folded, to the either the right or the left of the table.

To go right along with this issues recipe of mussels, let's get down to the nitty-gritty about how to eat these tricky bitches. Sometimes are mussels are served already speared on a toothpick, which saves you a lot of headache, however everytime I have ever had them they are served as an appetizer in a broth in a soup plate. I personally take the meat out with my fork. Of course there are such things as oyster forks, but who has those laying around the house. Discard the empty shells onto another plate. It is also considered appropriate to take bread and soak up the broth, actually it is encouraged. Here, try this recipe to strut your stuff with. |
Recently I had to send out my thank you notes for my Christmas gifts. Well I came across a small dilemna" . My boyfriend's grandmother is a widow. Well I thought does that mean I address her letter Ms. now instead of Mrs? I had to reference this issue. Well as it turns out, and now seems quite obvious, just because a person's spouse dies does not change their title. It is still appropriate to refer to the widow as Mrs. |
