egon behind the curtain

BASEMENT LIFE ZINE: First things first: falsetto vocals are a little bit annoying when they take up an entire album. Including them is not recommended, but in Egon's case they work... well. Even with an at times irritating facet, Egon still manage to amaze. The El Paso, Texas trio excels at creating a complicated web of sounds that tumble through time signatures, tones and volume levels. Even when vocalist Victor is semi-squeaking his way through songs, smart choruses like, "I'm taken for granted/ I'm gifted and talented/ I'm better than any/ and judging the many," still manage to emblazon themselves on the mind of even the moderately interested listener. Like a more dynamic version of math rockers The Wicked Farleys, Egon's music defies simple categorization and simply showcases a group of gifted musicians and songwriters. From arty intros to punk rock crescendos, the band tackles every twist and turn with calculated precision. The music on Behind the Curtain is rarely predictable, even after multiple listens, and all 10 tracks point in a different sonic direction. Even when Egon drops into a solid groove, the music is constantly evolving towards a greater moment and much of the groups forward momentum is found through the record's truly stunning drum work. An unforeseen release that could unfortunately manage to slip through the cracks, Egon's newest release is one of the more refreshing new records to come out in a while. PD

Egon came to be in the spring of 1996 with guitarist/vocalist Victor and his friend Joey on the drums. There have been a few change ups as far as bass players go, but Lauren is here to stay. Egon currently calls El Paso, TX home.
