By: Hope Perkins Only after I got a really bad haircut did I discover the beauty in hair extensions. Now I am no VH1 Diva, just a girl with a really bad do. Who says only Britney and Little Kim can get away with hair extensions? Hair extensions are perfect for a night out on the town or for just shits-n-giggles.
Many Sally’s Beauty Supply stores now carry hair extensions. I suggest getting the human hair because it is much more realistic looking and you can dye it if you need to (or curl or crimp!). At first I thought it was kinda creepy wearing some toothless crackwhores hair. But soon I came to appreciate her addiction that eventually made her sell her body and hair. You obviously want to find a shade closest to your own hair color. You will also be able to find the hair glue and remover, bobby pins and fine toothcomb at Sally’s. The hair comes sewn together at the roots (tracks). I suggest cutting the hair in sections about 5 to 6 inches long. You can section off your own hair as you go along. I would start on the side so you can see what you’re doing and get a feel for it. Make a horizontal part about 5 or 6 inches long with your fine toothcomb. Your part should be about 3 inches above your ear. You will want to leave enough of your own hair on the crown of your head to cover the first track. Use bobby pins to keep your hair in place. Place a thin line of glue along the seam of the hair. Next you are going to place the hair with the glue right below the part. Hold in it in place for about 30 seconds until glue has dried. Once the glue has dried make another horizontal part about an inch below and repeat the steps above. 3 or possibly 4 tracks should be sufficient for the sides of your head. You don’t want too many on the sides or you may end up looking a little hydrocephalic. You will possibly use up to 5 or 6 for the back of your head. Your hair tends to be naturally fuller in the back. Now the back of the head is a little trickier since you cant exactly see what you are doing. You may want a friend to be involved to help you place hair directly below the part. Your new luscious locks will stay in for at least a couple of days. They don’t necessarily with stand a hair washing so as long as you don’t wash your hair they should stay in place. When you are ready to remove them just apply the hair glue remover on your roots for about 20 minutes and the tracks will come right out. The first time you do this its probably not going to look all that great but just like anything else with practice you will get better. And even if you do end up looking like one of the members of Ratt you can always put it in a sleek on top, messy low ponytail. Hair extensions are perfect for just a night out on the town or hell for everyday wear. Your bags are packed and you have now entered Divaville.
