What
to do with a birdcage?
Make it into
a hanging basket for a plant, dugh.
|
Pointers
for making a hanging basket...
 |
Well
first you want to get yourself a hanging basket with a coco husk
liner, some dirt and a variety of pretty plants.
|
Some
people recommend putting plastic in-between the dirt and the liner of
the basket. Since hanging baskets get air in all directions, the soil
dries out quicker and this helps it to retain moisture better. Poke
a few holes in the plastic.
When
selecting plants for a hanging basket be sure to take into consideration
things like where the basket is going to hang (do you need plants that
like shade or are very heat tolerant?) Also, try to think about plants
that dangle and drape off the side as well as stand up. Size, color,
texture, the way a plant hangs the more of these elements you can mix
the prettier your basket.
For
this basket I chose: Kaleidoscope Coleus, Diva Fuchsia, Asparagus Fern,
Impatients, some sort of ivy and a spiky mini palm. Now here is a trick...
 |
Buy
a ready made hanging basket and split it up.
I bought
an impatient in a hanging basket at Wal-Mart that on closer inspection
was really three plants.
I cut
the plant apart with a knife and then separated them.
|
Then I had
2 extra plants for the pots I was making to go next to my front door!
| Next
step you want to add a little dirt to your basket and arrange your
plants in pretty pattern. |
 |
When
you have the arrangement you want take the plants out of their cartons
and finger out the roots a little bit. Sit them in the basket and make
sure everything is sitting on enough dirt to where it is not going to
get buried.
 |
Next
add more dirt to cover all exposed roots and finish filing the basket
up. Hang the puppy up and water really well. |
Remember
since hanging basket plants are having to kind of fight each other for
food and water you might remember that you are going to need to fertilize
and water more often than usual.
