Ghosts
and Vodka - Precious Blood - Six Gun Lover
Review by: Chris Boehk
Unpredictable. That's the one word I would use to describe this disc. Unpredictable. Not so much in that I didn't know what it would sound like, I knew that already, and you probably do as well.
Containing two members of the legendary Capn' Jazz (one of them being the main songwriter - Victor Villereal), and following up a completely awesome 7" from about 2 years back, Ghosts and Vodka has the sound you would expect from four guys from the Chicago-area of the country - herky, jerky, spastic pop filled to the brim with hooks and melodies.
When I say unpredictable, I mean this CD is like a fucking rollercoaster. Twists and turns and ups and downs throughout. These guys hook you (and believe me, this is loaded with hooks) and right about the time you start to get into that groove, they throw you for a loop into something else. These are the kind of songs that you can listen to over and over. You never know what's coming next. I've listened to this disc about 10 times and I really couldn't tell you how a particular song goes. The songwriting is absolutely amazing - it pulls you in, takes you for a ride, and never lets you catch your breath.
This CD, as their 7", is vocal-less, which is cool with me, because its already busy enough as it is. Throwing anything else into the mix would just be hurting rather than helping. Personally, I think this CD is a little too long (yeah, what an awful complaint). These 12 songs are so interesting and complicated, that I almost get a sensory overload if I listen to the whole thing from beginning to end.
I'd tell you that I recommend that you pick this up if you're a fan of Capn' Jazz, but if you're like me, you've been waiting for this CD for way, way too long, and you don't need anybody to tell you that its awesome.
