Koufax - It Had To Do With Love - Heroes and Villians
Review by: Jennifer Perkins
My boyfriend insisted on buying me this CD. Why you ask, besides the fact that he is just souper cool, well because he knows I have a fascination with Billy Joel and he thought that Koufax sounded like an Indie Rock version of just that. Does it? Well there are heart felt upbeat songs with a piano in the mix yes.
On the first few listens I really was not that impressed with the CD it took me awhile to realize like Sally Field at the Oscar's, "I like it, I really like it". It's pretty God Damned catchy, and any pop addict like myself would be hard pressed to turn their nose up at toe tappin' songs like "Going to Happen".
Do I have a complaint? Do woman sit and back stab each other for hours on end? Well here it is. They sure do sing about drugs a lot. I guess I am just a little old and that seems like a fairly juvenile subject matter. Especially since I am one of those assholes that has to sing a long to everything. I don't know that is my one weird hang ups. Does it make me not sing along, well much to the dismay of my friends and family no it has not stopped me.
My favorite and probably most Billy Joel like song is "Out of Your Element". There are poppy songs as well as sad ones. There is even an ambient instrumental number. Bare with me on this obscure reference, but if you took out the piano it sounds like a song from that movie Akira, a song called "Winds Over Neo Tokyo" to be exact. ANYWAY. There is not a bad song on the CD.
This CD is very vocal heavy, hence the subject matter (and its not subject matter that dominates the CD or anything) irking me a tad. I love this guy's voice. Funny this CD was produced by Dave Trumfio because that is exactly who this guys vocals remind me of. The whole sound in a way has that poppy keyboard feel we all loved about The Pulsars for that matter. However, Koufax are good in their own right and at the same time individual in their sound.
