Loretta Lynn - Loretta Lynn Country Music Hall of Fame Series - MCA

Review by: Jennifer Perkins

From the moment I first saw Coal Miners Daughter I was a Loretta Lynn fan. Well actually that is Sissy Spacek singing in the movie, but it was the gist of the songs from the film that grabbed my attention. Poor white trash making it big has always intrigued me (reference my fascination with Dolly Parton). Loretta Lynn is a feisty feminist in her own little country way and that makes her precious in my book.

First off the lyrics to Loretta Lynn songs are hilarious. Here is an example of one of my favorites, "Fist City" and I thought I was a jealous girlfriend. The song is about some tramp going for Loretta's man..."But the man I love when he picks up trash he puts it in a garbage can, and that's what you look like to me...if you don't wanna go to Fist City you better detour around my town, cuz I'll grab you by the hair (pronounced hare) of the head and I'll lift you off of the ground". Now if that's no an anthem I don't know what is.

But it's not like Loretta is obsessed with her man, and thinks he can do no wrong, oh no. Take for instance "Your Squaw is on the Warpath". Here is another lyric snippet "Well you leave me at home to keep the tepee clean, and 6 papooses to break and wean". A song I personally relate to is "Don't Come Home a Drinkin' (with lovin' on your mind)". Loretta don't take no crap.

And Don't Expect this little Lady to stay home and be your personal baby factory, oh no she got fed up with that along time ago. Songs like "One's on the Way" and "The Pill", Loretta would make Margaret Sanger proud exercising her right to birth control. Loretta lets her man know that she is poppin' the pill like candy these days and that its her turn to go out and have some fun.

Of course Loretta Lynn's most well know hit, "Coal Miners Daughter" is here. A name I tossed around for Naughty Secretary Club was "Butcher Holler", but I didn't think anyone would get it, so I skipped it. That is the name of Loretta's home town.

Loretta Lynn is a music legend and deserves her title as one of the First Ladies of Country. All her songs tell a story of a young woman with a point to make. And you better make damn sure you listen up when she sings, youheard what she did to the chick in Fist City!
