Make Way for No Karma – No Karma

Review by Jennifer Perkins

Who knew No Karma was so diverse? Their label sampler, Make Way for No Karma, leaves no musical stone unturned. There are perky harmonicas (The Urban Legends), spoken diatribes (Kolya), chaotic punk (IfIHadAHiFi) and thick walls of 80’s distortion (New Radiant Storm Kings).

There are bands I am familiar with and bands I had never heard of before this comp, but that’s the whole point of these things isn’t it. Bands like Kolya, The Buddyrevelles, Por Avion, and the New Radiant Storm Kings were bands I was previously familiar with. New bands like The French New Wave, OIO and Mahogany Throttle were brought to my attention and I am thankful for it.

There were the noisy punk bands like IfIHadAHiFi and the Fugazi influenced The Falling. There were chipper pop bands like The Urban Legends and Sault Ste. Marie. There were bands with girl singers like the Andi Camp and the Velocity Girl-esque Macabees.

Favorites on Make Way for No Karma included The Urban Legends for their male and female vocals and gushing pop appeal. Kolya, although covering grounds Chris Leo forged a long time ago, are always good. IfIHadAHiFi gets the vote for most likely to be the next big Indie thing.
