Those Peabodys -S/T- Post Parlo
Review by: Jennifer Perkins
I am so lucky to live in Austin where good bands are as abundant as white trash at a clan rally. There is never a dull night here, you could go see a band play every single day if you wanted. One of the most recent additions to Austin's Indie Rawk Army are Those Peabodys. Those Peabodys bring the rock like it should be: plain, loud, and chocked full of attitude.
Plain does not necessarily have a negative connotation in the rock-roll sense of the word. By plain I mean in a Donnas or Ramones kind of way. These guys are not going to give Joe Satarani or Steve Vai a run for their money anytime soon, but they can write a damn catchy guitar line, full of hooks. The subject matter is basic, things like every Southern child's heroes' The Duke Boys. Lyrics as profound as "Oh Ya, Alright Already, Oh Ya, Kick Some Ass". Make no mistake the simplicity of this is what makes it good. If you are looking for a diatribe reference The Lapse, what you are going to find here is light weight fun rock.
Loud. These kids know their metal basics. The guitars are rockin' and their drumming on the snare infused side. Always a winner of a combo. Two male vocalist take turns spinning yarn over the rowdy beats. I have to play this loud in my house while I dance around the kitchen cooking dinner after a long day and in my car when I drag my ass to work in the morning. Anywhere you listen to Those Peabodys it needs to be loud to get the full intended effect.
Yes, there are a million and one garage rock punk bands around today. Get out your Lookout Records catalog and randomly pick any. However, Those Peabodys have something special. Is it my hometown pride getting in the way here? Maybe, but I like to think it is just because these kids are just good, the end. Straight forward rock, none of that mathy jerking you off shit. Those Peabodys get straight to the rock-n-roll point with a fury and a slap on the groovin' ass for good measure.
