Subset - Overpass - Post Parlo

Review by: Jennifer Perkins

A hidden gem in the land of Indie pop mediocrity. It's hard for me to believe this CD is not bigger than it is. This Austin, Texas three piece knows how to write a great pop song. Not to mention contains members of and was recorded by members of Silver Scooter and God knows they are known for some good tune makin'. Subset's "Overpass" is so ready to be pumped through every dormitory radio it amazes me. I can imagine walking down the dorm hall in my flip flops on the way to the shower hearing "Antenna" pouring out from underneath a numbered door.

There are songs like "Disarmament" with the 'Ut-Oh's' that I know better than to listen to as the last song I hear in the morning, I'll be singing that bitch all day long. These boys can also play guitar, and even add in some distortion for good measure occasionally. Don't let the sweet coating fool you, occasionally there is a tart and rocking center to be found.

The first song "Anchor" alone is worth your trip to the record store. Other songs with lyrics like "Each October the clouds get darker than before" could not seem more poignant than on a night like this in fall when it is windy and cold just like Lindsey is singing about today in particular. So far the band is popalicious, rock-a-saurus-rex, and now introspective on top of that. Most records can't convey one thing, let a long all this. Go get this record damn it.
