Jenny Hart (Sublime Stiching, The Hidden Persuaders, and Harvey Sid Fisher)

Assuming I can get in to these places, and be in more than one place at once, my Wednesday night looks like this:

Hitting 6th street with Harvey Sid Fisher. He always wants to do this, and we end up popping in and out of whatever venue we fancy while Harvey's fans approach him in disbelief of crossing paths with the Astrology song crooner (really). Meanwhile, Harvey hits it big with the ladies by telling them corny jokes. This will surely be my most entertaining event for the evening.

Mandible (Austin) 10pm @ Hole in the Wall -Really fun, funny and rocking. Their music can be dreamy, sad, snide, with horns, guitars, keys, fuzzy bear costumes....I have grown to like Mandible quite a lot.

There's no way I'll make it to see They Might Be Giants (Brooklyn) 11:30 @ La Zona Rosa but that's no excuse for you not to go.

Has Anyone Ever Told You? Label Showcase (Austin) 11pm @ Maggie Mae's. The real reason I'm skipping TMBG.

Sexy Finger Champs (Austin) 12am @ Opal Divine's -the last band to which I got really drunk while dancing and singing along in front of the stage. I'm a dork.

Friday I will not miss the Bloodshot Records BBQ at Yard Dog Gallery on South Congress. Bands and beer start at noon, and I'll have an embroidered version of one of Jon Langford's (The Mekons / Waco Brothers) paintings on display."

THE SXSW SUMMARY

So I am sure it will not come as any big shock to you my faithful readers, that well I slacked on my SXSW diary. I did upload new pictures daily, but my reports lagged. Between being hung-over and sleeping till noon then heading out for a free day show then coming home stuffing my face and going out for the night, there just was not much writing time. You forgive me right? At least I am about to give you this summary, and there were all those cool pictures I was religious about uploading.

So where were we? Ah yes, Friday. Well I skipped all day shows and parties. I needed a music free day. My house guests left so I opted to spend the afternoon in my jammies. Friday night started early, 8pm at The Hideout with Rebecca Gates. The hideout is a coffee shop on congress and all the way in the back was this puppet show like theatre. Ms. Gates had started by the time we got there, but we snuck into the bleachers. The nose bleed section as you can see from my pictures. I am a HUGE Spinanes fan, probably one of my favorite bands of all time, so Rebecca Gates could take a shit and I would be impressed. She seemed nervous and shy and it was just her and a guitar. She even sang an acoustic Spinanes song. She made my heart hurt as always.

Did I mention on the way to her show we passed by Wild About Music on Congress and there in the window display was one of my bracelets. I made Chris take my picture in front of the window. I have never done anything that has been in a big store front, woo-hoo.

OK so we had to haul ass to the next joint. We left Erin there to either see Calvin Johnson who was up next or go home sick. We picked up Naughty Secretary Club staff writer Dave Morgan and we were off The Scottish Rite Theatre for Shannon Wright at 9pm. Those old men that work at that place were so cute. Saying hello and telling us to let them know if we needed anything. Precious. The stage was really cool and was set for a play in a forest scene. So Shannon Wright playing underneath all the faux foliage was prrrfect. There is something so intense about Shannon Wright I am taunt and on edge the whole time she is performing. Next to Peaches her performance at Emo’s last year was one of the best shows of 2001. Anyway, Shannon was wonderful, just not long enough. She left the drummer at home and it was just her alternating from organ to guitar.

Back in the car for a mad dash downtown. We were planning on trying to catch Shearwater at Hickory Street, but alas by the time we found parking there was no time. So we opted to head for The Tiger Style showcase over at Buffalo Billiards. Mostly I just stood there and talked to friends and drank. The Rye Coalition were like metal background music. I did pay attention to Her Space Holiday and they sounded like something I need to look further into.

At 1am I opted out of the Tiger Style headliners, American Analog set and made my way to Emo’s for Chicks on Speed. Bad choice. They were GOD AWFUL. I guy walked by me and I heard him say to his friend “This band gets the award for largest crowd, worst band”. Amen brother. They were just goofy and danced around to samples and twirled scarves you had to wonder how they got a headlining gig at the outside stage at Emo’s. Home bed.

SATURDAY. Sweet Jesus, thank you that it is the last day of this I couldn’t take much more. Today started REALLY early, 12pm. My buddy Tina and I headed for Yard Dog on S. Congress to see our friend Jenny’s art. There was free beer and a band too. Woo-hoo. After coveting Jenny’s embroidered creations we headed for Club Deville for The Glurp Records/KVRX party. Swearing at Motorists was playing when we walked in, and I was sad I had missed any. They were super good, although I later learned that they do not usually sound the way they did that afternoon, apparently due to broken equipment they were forced to tone the whole thing down. Either way, they should work the almost acoustic thing, it was damn fine.

Next was Okkervil River, who I had come for. Since I missed Shearwater the night before I decided to make it up this way (they share members). I was so impressed with these guys. Their record blew me away and to be able to convey that sound live was a something to behold. Have you ever seen someone rock out with an accordion? Its like really intense folk music or punk, not alt, country. Good stuff and you should check them and their record out.

Then there was The Mendoza Line. I had never heard them before and they were pretty damn good. I bet they are better on record. One of the dudes seemed a little on the tipsy side, whatever it’s a party why shouldn’t he be. I am always a sucker for bands with girl and boy singers.

Grand Champeen. Who are these people and how have a I missed them? They obviously had the biggest crowd of the day, people were coming out of the woodwork for these guys. They are Austinites, but I had never heard them or seen them. They were super fun pop rock stuff, with a cute dirty guy in the band. Their label, Glurp, was a co-host of this shindig. I’ll keep my fingers crossed they send me a CD to review (hint-hint). I’ll be keeping an eye peeled for when these guys play out. All three members of my party agreed that they were the band of the day worth looking into.

Next was John Vanderslice who was, pardon my French, Fucking Amazing. I had only heard a couple for MP3s by this guy, but he blew me away. I must acquire his whole discography. Then on top of that who the hell was that drummer on tour with him? He was so animated, singing along and miming the lyrics and at the same time he was kick ass impressive. I gots to get me some of dis.

Are you thinking at this point, damn doesn’t your ass hurt from sitting through all these bands, aren’t you getting hungry and cold sitting outside. Well we had the best table in the joint and I had come this far I was not about to miss American Analog Set twice in one week. Plus that who my buddy Erin had come to see. I am embarrassed to say, I have never seen American Analog Set. I have lived in Austin over 5 years and not once. I am not sure I have heard that much by them. Ya, ya, ya now I know I have been living in the dark. I am one of those asshole people that tends to snub local bands even ones with huge followings like American Analog Set. I see the error of my ways and now have crossed over into their dark side.

Quick ghetto dinner at Taqareia Arandas. Stop over at home to touch up my lipstick and put in my lip ring, because I needed to feel young again then we were off for downtown. My friend Jenny was playing with Harvey Sid Fischer at the Empanada Parlor. Well she warned me it would be crowded, and she was right. Between them on one stage and Mary Lou Lord on the other stage in the club, we could not even get in. we had to stand on rocks and watch and I couldn’t even see Jenny damn it. I was disappointed, but I did get to hear a song about the F Word.

So I thought Vermont was at Emo’s and I was wrong so we walked through these and on our way to buffalo Billiards were Vermont was really playing I noticed a long line at The Ritz where we were headed next. I decided to skip Davey and secure a spot for the Actionslacks and Post Parlo showcase. The upstairs part of The Ritz is small and that blows. Small equals extra smokey and that blows even more, plus the losers were all out of any kind of decent beer and I was subjected to Lone star. I pulled through.

First up was The Actionslacks, who I was really excited to see. I loved their last record and to my knowledge they had not been through Austin in a good long while. Thy were fun and poppy and had a lot of energy. Then as if I didn’t hate this club enough a middle aged man with a chip on his shoulder came over and told me I had to stop taking pictures because I did not have a press pass. ASSHOLE! So I pouted and sat through the rest of their set.

My buddy Ben and his band The Western Keys was next. The second half of the night was a showcase for his label Post Parlo. Western Keys did their mellow country thing. I really like Ben’s tug at your heart strings voice. Mainly through their set I had to keep watch on Ben’s parents for my sister so she could sneak and smoke her cigarettes without them seeing. Afterall, she does want to appear to be the perfect girlfriend.

Next up was Subset. I had just seen them like a week before. They are a great pop band. I was glad they were under a time constraint as there is an ongoing joke about their sets typically being a little on the long side.

Those Peabodys, Austin’s metal God’s headlined the night. By this time I am standing up front, drunk and contemplating throwing my fist in the air to the beat. However, they were deafening and I was tired and my ride was leaving. I opted to leave my car downtown, because drunk driving blows.

So that’s it. Its all over now. For as tired as I am on Sunday I felt kind of let down and sad the big party was done. Oh well I am going to need about a year to fully recuperate and get ready for next year!

FRIDAY MARCH 15, 2002

I just realized that really every day I am writing about the day before. Like this says Friday, but really I am talking aout Thursday.

Big surprise I am no being as faithful to this diary thing as I swore I would be. Between house guests, day shows, night shows, hangovers and more this has been a low priority. Let me give you some scoop.

Thursday, I am not gonna lie, I was feeling a wee bit tired. HOWEVER, I went out like a trooper. My day started with lunch at Kim Phungs with my honey. Greasy Vietnamese food always makes me feel better. From there it was over to Thirty Three Degrees for some instores. First up was Sing Sing, featuring Emma from Lush. It was a damn fine show. Next was Holly Golightly. No, she didn't sing "Virtually Happy", but she did sing "Comedy Time" which made up for it. Both instores were delightful and I got to see some friends and hang out.

That night Chris, Hope and I all headed out early - shows started at 8. First was Buffalo Billiards to see Sing Sing again. I am glad we went to the day show because for one we missed half of their set and second of all there were a ton of people there and we had to stand in the back.

From here we decided to go check out the Summer Hymns at The Red Room. The sound there was pitiful so we cruised pretty quickly. Side Note: DAMN THE CHRONICLE FOR NOT LISTING THE 8pm FRANKLIN BRUNO SHOW! I would have skipped Sing Sing and gone there.

ANYWAY... from here it was on to Emo's for Holly Golightly (again). This place was filling up. Big shock since Luna went on in an hour and The Promise Ring was an hour after that. (The venue has 2 stages). So after waiting in line and cramming my way through we got to stand in the very back to see Holly Golightly play the same set she had 2 hours prior. Again, glad I went to the day show. Met Erin and her brother Brian here.

From here we lost members of our party, Hope, Erin and Brian. The pussies went home. Chris and I forged onwards to BD Rileys were we saw The AM FM. I thought they were great even though the sound guy blew. Side Note: last year we saw The Firebird Band at The Blind Pig Pub and the sound was SO AWFUL because the sound guy was drunk off his ass. This was the same sound guy and he had been hitting the sauce again this year. Despite all that, I thought it was a great set and we picked up our buddy Joey here.

Next was The Deathray Davies at Midnight at the Iron Cactus. We had put out a 7" by these guys on our record label so we needed to go show support. They were great as always and had a BIG crowd. They are always a lot of fun to see live, but by this time my age is starting to show and I am getting sleepy and so is Chris.

Our plans were to split up at 1 and he was going to stay and see Centromatic and I was going to go across the street and see The Rhythm of Black Lines. Well one is from Dallas and the other is from Austin so we decided they would be back and sleep was more important.

Bed. 4am dog wakes me up barking at Egon coming in. Back to sleep.

THURSDAY MARCH 14, 2002

All I have to say is thank you Jesus I had the foresight to take the next two days off from work for this. My old ass can not stay up till the wee hours of the morn, get up at 8, go to work and do the same thing again 2 days in a row. Hell it was hard for me to get up at 11:30 today. Although in my defense I went to bed at 4.

The night started off with my best friend Erin and sister Hope coming over for a primp fest. I mean you gotta look good right. So then we headed for downtown. We went to the Rehab Lounge first to see our buddies The Olive Group play. Damn did they sound tight and after all that band has been through: house fires, line up changes, 2 practices. I was muy impressed. The rest of the night was a candy gram booking showcase, so there was lots of free candy around. I was sad I had to leave because +/- was playing later, but they are also playing a house show Saturday, so I'll live.

Next we went to Club Deville to pick up Holly. Well Holly was not ready so Erin and I left Hope there and went on to see either The Boggs or Holiday Flyer. We saw neither and instead went on to Maggie Maes. On the way waiting at a cross walk I heard these guys behind us say "where are you headed man" the other respond "we are headed over to Maggie Mae's to see a band called We talked About Murder". I had never met dewey defeats truman, just put out their records. Plus there were two members of Egon I had never met, I only ended up meeting one of them. So I get introduced and the showcase started. There was a great turn out and we were all pleased as punch.

First up was We Talked About Murder. The poor babies were nervous, but they did so good. There were even strange people taking pictures and filming them. Apparently earlier in the day Joey (guitar player) was walking through the new Hard Rock Cafe were the local classic rock channel was broadcasting live from. Anyway he got the show plugged on air and one of the bands songs played. Woo-hoo. So there set was short but sweet.

Next up was dewey. It was cool getting to see these guys play live. All three of them were so nice, and great house guests. There were a lot of people there to see them and more importantly a lot of people who obviously knew their songs, which is always nice. They sounded every bit as good live as they do on CD. They are on tour right now, be sure to check them out if they come to your town, here are the dates.. DEWEY TOUR.

The headliners were El Paso's Egon. Egon has swapped out members since I had seen them last. No bass and now a keyboardist named Denise and all new drummer. Musically they had not changed much, the keyboard is a nice addition. A lot of people friends and fan came out to see them. They are on tour right now too, so be sure to check them out.

Well the rest of the night went fine. My sister Hope got to meet The Dwarves and was elated. I had really bad cheap pizza. Got to see a bunch of friends. Stayed up way too late and drank way too much.

It is about 6:30 in the evening now and at 8 I am gonna do the whole thing over again. Hell I have already been to see Sing Sing and Holly Golighly at Thirty Three Degrees. I'll be all over the place tonight: Sing Sing and Holly Golighly again, AM/FM, The Kingsbury Manx, The Deathray Davies, Rhythm of Black Lines, Ted Leo, Centromatic. Well gotta go primp and start getting ready!

TUESDAY MARCH 12, 2002

Well technically SXSW has not started, but at my house it might as well have. Tomorrow night there will be 10 people, 11 counting my 65 pound dog, sleeping in my small 3 bedroom home. Lord help me. Spent the evening cleaning and getting ready for the company.

The key to a successful SXSW is all about scheduling. Another very important part of my evening has been spent really thinking through my schedule of bands. Unbeknownst to some, there are parties and instores at local record shops all week too! So if say 2 bands you really want to see are playing at the same time, never fear there is a damn good chance one of them will be playing a free instore or day party somewhere.

Take for example the instores at Thirty Three Degrees Records...* indicates ones I will be attempting to attend...

Wednesday, March 13th 3pm - 27

* 4pm - Mahogany (I heard them on KVRX this morning, they were pretty good)

5pm - Kawabata Makoto with Charles Curtis

6pm - Acid Mothers

Thursday, March 14th 2pm - Alsace Lorraine

3pm - Jim & Jennie & the Pinetops

* 4pm - Sing-Sing (Anyone vaguely related to Lush, I am so there)

* 5pm - Holly Golightly (Anyone vaguely related to Billy Childish, I am so there. Side Note: Please God let her sing "Virtually Happy")

Friday, March 15th

2pm - Black Sun Ensemble

3pm - Agenda

* 4pm - Mooney Suzuki

5pm - The Briefs

There are some at Cheapos as well...

Then there is the party at Porchlight Studios

1:30 - Dan Cray 2:00 - Octopus Project 2:30 - Black Lipstick 3:00 - Knife in the water 3:30 - Kait0 4:00 - Prescott Curlywolf 4:30 - +/- 5:00 - Mittens OK 5:30 - Palaxy Tracks 6:00 - Subset 6:30 - Bedbug 7:00 - Golden Apples 7:30 - Milton Mapes 8:00 - fivehead (?)

So this is going to be a long next few days. I am almost getting too old for this. Each year I look over the list of SXSW bands and there are fewer and fewer bands I am interested in. Is it that they are booking shittier, or am I getting older and more out of touch? I remember the years when I ran all over town like a mad woman to see a different band every hour at a different club.

Favorite SXSW acts of the past include: Small Factory, The Shins, Thomas Jefferson Slave Apartments, The Firebird Band, The Red Aunts, J Masics-Mike Watt-Ron Asheton (playing together!), Unsane-Godheadsilo-and Fitz of Depression (all one right after the other, I was deaf for days), Seven Year Bitch, The White Stripes, Ruby, The Fugees, Ben Lee-Bis (I still could kill myself for leaving before Atari Teenage Riot) AHA - Alec Empire (that made up for it), Camden, Lolita # 18 (If there is a lull on your schedule head to whatever club is hosting Japan night), Two Ton Boa. Let's hope this year has some shows that hold soft spots in my heart like these gems.

OK I am putting off cleaning and I still have to go vacum Lucy's hair off the guest bed. Expect update number two Thursday so I can tell you all about how my label showcase went!
