The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas Soundtrack

Review by: Jennifer Perkins

First of all, I am a firm believer that anything Dolly Parton touches is gold. That said, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas is the shining jewel in her crown of achievement. The pentacle of her career. She was born to be Ms. Mona the brothel owner of the legendary chicken ranch in Texas.

My fascination with The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas goes back a long way. I can remember the hurt and confusion I felt when as a child at a flea market my parents refused to buy me the star shaped badge I had found that had a big picture of a rooster and said "good for one free ride at the chicken ranch". I thought there was a giant chicken amusement park somewhere that my parents were depriving me of. Little did I know the term 'ride' had a whole different meaning.

Next in Whorehouse lineage came my childhood best friend Erin. I can remember attending a birthday party where we came in costume and she came in a negligée with balloons stuffed inside posing as a mysterious blonde vixen I was not familiar with. The next time I slept over she showed me the light by popping The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas into the family betamax and the rest is history.

The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas soundtrack is one of my very favorite CDs and I listen to it often. Much to the dismay of my boyfriend I know every word. Down to the banter between Dolly and the prostitutes on "A Lil' Ole Bitty Pissant Country Place" to the slightest quiver in Dolly's voice as she sings "I Will Always Love You" about a young Burt Reynolds who plays her lover in the movie. Let me just state for the record Whitney Houston's version does not hold a candle to Dolly.

Right here after the Holiday Season "Hard Candy Christmas" is fresh on my mind, the song they play as all the hookers are forced to leave and move on. This soundtrack even has great songs that Dolly didn't sing. "Watchdog Report/Texas Has a Whorehouse In It" is a prime example performed by Dom Deluise and The Dogettes. How can you not love a song that chants "Stop the copulation". Another gem is the song performed by Charles Durning who plays the governor of Texas "The Sidestep".

Sure Rhinestone was amusing and 9 to 5 is a close second, but The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas will always be my favorite Dolly Parton movie and favorite soundtrack of all time.
